Hunching over, especially for long periods of time, will cause some muscles in the neck, back and chest to remain contracted. If this becomes a regular position then the muscle fibres can get stuck together which can send pain shooting through the area. This may cause local pain, pain down the arm, up into the head or chest pain. It will restrict the way you can move and stop you from getting out and enjoying the summer the way you want to. Sustained bad posture will also reduce the space for your internal organs which may cause digestion problems and a reduced lung capacity.
There is continuous talk about having good posture but what constitutes good posture? Here are a few checkpoints to take note of.
• Your ears should line up with the middle of your shoulder
• Your shoulder blades should be parallel with the spine
• The lower back should have a slight concave curve
• Weight should be distributed evenly through both hips and legs
• Ankles should sit centrally over feet
Even knowing all this doesn’t mean you will remember and be conscious of it during the day. One way to remind yourself is the posture balloon. Picture you have a helium balloon tied to the top of your head. It is pulling your head up, your shoulders fall down naturally, weight is distributed evenly. What colour is your balloon? Make it as big, beautiful and colourful as you want.
Your balloon is always there, but it is unrealistic to be aware of it every second of every day so just try to remember it whenever you see the colour of your balloon. For example if your balloon is red, every time you pass a red car, a fire hydrant, stop sign, a red light or anything red you will picture that balloon holding you up. If your balloon is a colour that isn’t around as much or you want to be reminded more often then buy some stickers from the newsagency in the colour and stick them where you will notice them, on your computer, your phone or in your car.
